In an interesting move, Facebook has announced they are making an update to the News Feed over the coming months that will demote stories that link to slower loading web pages, particularly on mobile devices.
In all reality, this is no different to how Google factor page speed into their SERP algorithms, but it does make us wonder if this is a move to push marketers to start using Facebook’s Instant Articles format.
As part of the official announcement:
Factors such as the person’s current network connection and the general speed of the corresponding web page will be considered. If signals indicate the web page will load quickly, the link to that web page might appear higher in your feed.
So how will this affect digital marketers? Simply put, if you are not already working to get your page speed down, you need to get on it immediately. Not only because of this development but also because it strongly affects your SEO.
