Wow, that escalated quickly. Twitter has announced that it is now 10 years since the first use of the # Hashtag.

So who came up with this wildly overused phenomenon? It was Twitter user Chris Messina who got the idea from throwbacks to the early days of IRC (Internet Relay Chat) and the early form of predictive text, T-9.

Messina actually pitched the idea to Twitter founder Biz Stone who almost ignored it. To be fair, Biz was more focussed on addressing the constant crashing. We all remember the FailWhale days.

Messina, then Tweeted out the idea and the rest, as they say, is #history.
