If you are an AdWords advertiser, then good news, you just got a brand spanking new option for video ads. The new format is called Outstream Video Ads and will be an option on Google video partner mobile apps and sites (yes, mobile only).

What makes Outstream Video Ads different from other types (like TrueView in-stream ads or Bumper ads) is that it does not require placement within a YouTube video.

So let’s break down what that means. Currently, if you want to run a bumper or TrueView ad outside of YouTube, they still need to be attached to a YouTube placement. This new format works more like a Responsive ad on Google Display Network.

As per good ad practice, the videos will run without the sound playing and require the viewer to tap the video to activate the audio. The user can also choose to restart the video (a nice touch).

These new ad units can be purchased on a CPM basis and require the following:

  • Logo
  • Video
  • Headline
  • Description
  • Thumbnail (this one is optional)
  • Destination URL
